Comments from Ernest J. Memery

I have lived in Barboursville for 20 years, I became a U.S. citizen 15 years ago, coming here from England. We receive many friends and family visiting from England, and all who come here are captivated by the scenic beauty, peace and tranquility of this area. General Shale is proposing to destroy this for our family, and our neighbours, completely. Our home faces the junction of rt.738 onto rt.20, in fact our front yard used to extend to rt.738 when it was rt.20 into Barboursville. This junction will need to undergo major changes to accommodate the proposed mining traffic, in fact it will have to become an industrial intersection, this on a scenic byway between Barboursville , Montpelier and Orange. Added to that all residents in this area will, for 50 weeks a year, 6 days a week, 8 hours a day, and as yet an unknown number of times per hour, have to endure the noise, pollution and sight of large tandem trucks coming and going through this intersection. This will be some 15 yards from our front door, and would continue for the rest of my life!

I understand the need to balance the interests of the citizens of Orange County with the economic growth of the area. To see a perfect example of that, come to Barboursville. We have commercial enterprise, Lams lumber, two successful wineries, an artists quarter, and these businesses not only operate in harmony with the rural and agricultural nature of this area, they enhance and support it. The General Shale strip mine will not, in fact it is a complete abomination. It will destroy the tranquility and rural integrity of our town, and it will devalue not only our quality of life, but also in real terms our homes and properties. Please do not allow that to happen.
